The Name

Since John and I started discussing adoption and especially since our decision to adopt embryos, I have been thinking about starting a blog to keep family and friends updated and to document our progress, provide a means for our future children to hear about their unique beginnings! Immediately I started thinking about a name for my blog. I thought of all the cute and witty names that other people have for their blogs. I thought about double meanings, Chinese words, something having to do with children. Nothing stuck--I'm not witty and the purpose of this blog is not to show off my writing or analyze anything deeply. I'm not a very good writer or philosopher. So I decided I couldn't start a blog because I just couldn't think of a suitable name, until last night. I was reading a children's Bible, and I read the story of Jesus calming the waves. I've read it a million times, but last night it struck a cord. Here's how it was written in the children's Bible:

Jesus stood up and spoke to the storm. "Hush! he said. That's all. And the strangest thing happened...The wind and the waves recognized Jesus' voice. (The Jesus Storybook Bible, Sally Lloyd-Jones)

After reading that I realized that's what I need: Jesus to stand up and speak to the storm in my heart and mind. Hush! Not a "shh", or an "OK, time to quiet down now." But a strong commanding "HUSH!" The doubts that fill my mind daily about this adoption and about almost everything I do are enough to drive me crazy. Jesus tell my soul to hush. Give me the faith the cling on to the boat in this crazy storm I am beginning to ride knowing that you are right by my side and that you simply say one little sound and the wind and the waves listen to your voice.
